What Cool Deck Coating Does for a Phoenix Pool Deck
Cool deck coating is a spray-applied texture coating that goes over your existing concrete, and on a sound Phoenix deck it takes 1–2 days of work, a 3–7 day cure, and typically lasts 10–12 years. It is the surface most Phoenix homeowners mean when they say "cool deck": light, textured, up to 30°F cooler than bare concrete in direct sun (an infrared image from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Heat Island Group shows light paving about 30°F cooler than dark; that is road pavement, not pool decks), and re-coatable instead of replaceable when it wears. You will also see it called an acrylic cool deck or an acrylic pool deck coating; those are other names for the same kind of spray-applied system. Can Your Existing Pool Deck Be Resurfaced?
Most Phoenix decks can. The concrete underneath must be sound, and any failed coating on top must be removable or repairable — the same check that opens every pool deck resurfacing job we quote.
Good candidates: faded or chalky cool deck, old Kool Deck that is worn but still bonded, plain broom-finish concrete, decks with hairline or surface cracks, and decks where the color or texture is simply dated.
Needs repair first, then resurfacing: flaking or hollow-sounding areas, spalling around the pool edge, pitted concrete from years of chlorinated water, and drainage low spots that hold water after a storm.

What We Repair Before Applying Coating
The coating is only as good as what it is stuck to. Prep is most of the job.
- Loose and delaminated coating is stripped back to solid concrete. Coating over a hollow spot just moves the failure up a layer.
- Cracks are opened, cleaned, filled with a flexible repair compound, and feathered so they do not telegraph through the texture. Cracks driven by ongoing slab movement can reopen; if we see the signs, it is written into your estimate.
- Spalls and pits around the coping and skimmer are patched and leveled.

- Old sealers, efflorescence, and pool chemical residue are removed so the primer bonds to concrete, not to whatever was sitting on it.
If your deck is genuine Kool Deck®, know that the original product bonds only to clean, bare concrete and will not go over an old coating. Redoing it in real Kool Deck means stripping the deck first, so most re-coats of an existing deck, ours included, are a texture coating system. Choosing Color, Texture, and a Cooler Surface
Color is the biggest decision you make, and it is a heat decision as much as a style one. Light sand, cream, and pale gray reflect the most sun and get you closest to the "up to 30°F cooler" figure. Mid-tone tans and grays still run cooler than bare concrete but give up some of that margin. Dark charcoal and deep browns look sharp and get hot; we install them, but we say so first.
Texture depth is the second choice. A fuller lace gives more grip around the pool; a tighter, smoother lace is easier on chair legs in a dining area. Many decks get both, with the change hidden at a natural break.

A properly prepared cool deck coating lasts 10–12 years in the Phoenix Valley before it needs a fresh color coat. Poor preparation, constant water exposure from sprinklers or shade that never dries, dark colors in full sun, close-range pressure washing, and slab movement push that toward 5–7. Maintenance is light: rinse off pool chemical splash, keep deck drains clear, and skip the pressure washer at close range. When the surface starts to look chalky or the color goes flat, a re-seal or a new color coat over the existing texture is a one-day job and far cheaper than starting over.

Cool Deck Coating FAQs
Can cool deck coating be applied over my existing Kool Deck?
Usually, yes. If the old coating is still bonded, we clean and prime it and coat over it. Loose, hollow, or flaking areas are stripped back to solid concrete first. Genuine Kool Deck® bonds only to bare concrete, so it can't go over your existing surface without stripping the whole deck first; that is why most re-coats of an existing deck are a texture coating system like this one.
How much cooler is a cool deck coating than bare concrete?
Up to 30°F cooler in direct sun, depending on color. Light colors reflect more heat, and the lace texture reduces the amount of surface touching your foot. Dark colors give up part of that benefit, which we explain during color selection.
How long does cool deck coating last in Arizona?
10–12 years is typical on a properly prepared deck. Poor preparation, constant water exposure, dark colors in full sun, close-range pressure washing, and slab movement can shorten that to 5–7. Keeping drains clear and re-sealing when the surface starts to look chalky extends it.
How long before we can use the pool deck?
Application takes 1–2 days on most residential decks. Light foot traffic is fine after 24–48 hours. Furniture, planters, and full use wait for the 3–7 day cure, longer in cool or humid weather.
Do you repair cracks before coating?
Yes. Cracks are cleaned, filled, and blended before the texture coat, so hairline and surface cracks disappear. Cracks caused by ongoing slab movement can reappear over time. If we see that on your deck, we say so in the written estimate instead of promising they are gone for good.
Is cool deck coating the same as an acrylic pool deck coating?
In practice, yes. “Acrylic cool deck” and “acrylic pool deck coating” are other names for the same kind of spray-applied texture coating that goes over existing concrete. The name matters less than the prep, the product named on your written estimate, and the color, which decides how much cooler the deck runs. It is not the same as genuine Keystone Kool Deck® from Mortex, which bonds only to bare, sound concrete.
Is cool deck coating slippery when wet?
The spray-applied lace texture gives noticeably better traction than a smooth coating, but any pool deck can be slippery when wet. We can adjust texture depth: fuller for bare feet around the pool, smoother for patio dining areas.
