Pool deck resurfacing puts a new surface on concrete that is still sound. Under most 15- and 20-year-old Phoenix decks the slab is fine; it’s the top layer that has given up after years of sun, pool chemicals and monsoon water. That top layer is what a coating replaces.
Those are slab problems. A coating over a moving slab cracks again, usually by the second summer. When we see it at the estimate we say so, and the usual answer is to repour the failed section and then resurface the whole deck so it matches. Four systems cover almost every pool deck in the Valley. We install the first three; Genuine Kool Deck is the original Mortex product, which we explain at the estimate but don’t install, because it only goes on bare, sound concrete. The figure you’ll see from us is up to 30°F cooler than bare concrete in the sun, and the “up to” matters. Surface temperature follows reflectance: in an infrared comparison from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Heat Island Group, a light pavement segment measured about 30°F cooler than a dark one. A light deck works on the same principle. Choose a darker color and the gap shrinks.
Traction comes from texture. A knockdown or lace finish gives wet, bare feet something to grip, and it can be sprayed fuller around the water and tighter where furniture sits. Smooth, glossy sealed finishes look sharp but get slick when wet, so we don’t recommend them at the pool edge.
A properly prepared cool deck coating typically lasts 10–12 years in the Valley, or 5–7 under harsh exposure: full afternoon sun, heavy chlorine or salt splash, sprinklers hitting the surface. Stamped concrete runs 12–15 years and flagstone coating 10–15. To stay at the long end, rinse the deck instead of pressure-washing it at close range, keep sprinklers and planter drainage off it, wipe up spilled pool chemicals, and recoat when wear shows instead of waiting for bare concrete. Usually, yes. Hairline and spider cracks are surface problems: we open them, fill them with a flexible compound and feather them so they don’t show back through. A crack that keeps getting wider, has one side higher than the other, or runs along a section that has sunk or lifted means the slab is moving. A coating won’t stop that, so we tell you at the estimate and usually recommend replacing that section first.
Genuine Keystone Kool Deck from Mortex can go on existing concrete, but only bare, sound concrete: every existing coating has to be stripped first, per Mortex’s instructions for existing concrete. It won’t bond over a coating or painted surface, so a deck that’s already coated usually gets a cool deck coating system instead.
